Bruckner -- Nagano -- Vatican

Kent Nagano and the Bavarian State Orchestra (Bayerisches Staatsorchester) performed Bruckner's Ninth Symphony in Vatican on 22 October 2011. Bruckner's Te Deum was also performed by soloists from the Bavarian State Opera Choir and the 92 member strong Audi Youth Choir Academy (Audi Judendchorakademie) for Pope Benedict XVI.

Nagano was interviewed just before the concert and the audio clip can be heard from the Vatican Radio.

While still on Bruckner Ninth, a very interesting and thoughtful "walk-through" by pianist Peter Tiefenbach was broadcast on CBC Radio 2.

I've listened to Nagano's latest B7 disc on Sony and been impressed by his fine use of rubato and the light touches he applied to his phrasing. It was a live recording made on 23 September 2010, during a long European tour, in a cathedral in Gent, Belgium -- Saint Bavo Cathedral or Sint Baafskathedraal. After this concert, an orchestral member spoke of this unique experience of playing a Bruckner symphony in a cathedral and having a feeling of conversing with something higher. The Adagio is particularly affecting.

  1. Dear Horace,

I just heard a very good B7 live performance in Taiwan last month, the live experience is superior to CD listening IMHO. Johannes Wildner will come here to conduct B6 this month and I'll attend it too.

  2. Dear Sky,

I'm glad you enjoyed your concert.

As for whether live concerts are better than CD listening, IMHO the answer is yes and no. These two experiences are totally different and recorded music can never replace live music. That may be why Celibidache has always emphasized the "paraphenomena" of live concerts are absent in recorded music. However as far as satisfaction of the performance is concerned, there is no clear winner. In the past few months, I attended 2 concerts by famous orchestras conducted by famous conductors (AB8 Gwh Leipzig/Chailly and AB4 VPO/Eschenbach) but they both came out quite disenchanting. So it all depends.

Sometimes the concert management company can be quite off-putting, as the ticketing issue of the BPO/Rattle concert in Taiwan next Friday has shown.

Wish you enjoy your next Bruckner concert.

    Warm regards,

    Horace

  3. Dear Horace,

I think your comment is right, my previous opinion also neglected the historical dimension of music performing. I remembered reading an article concerning the Bruckner tradition in R.C.O. They established such tradition only when van Beinum steped in as chief conductor, former chief conductor Mengelberg did not include Bruckner as his core repetoire.
Pardon me for bad English and thanks your kind comment.
    Best regards,
    Sky
