Michael Gielen's Beethoven Ninth

A fulfilling conclusion to his under-rated Beethoven symphonies cycle.

Energetic playing with no hint of overindulgence. Able to rival with the best versions.

  3. I'm afraid the box-set is oup now. You may get second-hand copies from amazon uk, but are expensive.
If you like Gielen's Beethoven, you can also consider his DVD set of Beethoven symphonies.

    1. Hi George,

This new set is not the cycle (recorded 1986-1994) issued by EMI, of which No. 9 is shown above. This new Hanssler cycle should be, but I'm not sure, the one issued on DVD by EuroArts (recorded 1997-2000). The timings of No. 8 within this set correspond to those of the No. 8 issued by Hanssler before (CD 93.056).
Anyhow, I'd definitely go for it, judging from the sample excerpts on:

      Warm regards,

    2. Hi George,
Now I have more info on this new Hanssler set. It is indeed the audio recordings of the live performances in the EuroArts DVDs, with new remastering. The Eighth is also the same as CD93.056.
If you want his EMI cycle you may have to wait for any re-issue from Universal, now that EMI has been absorbed by them.
      Happy listening,
      Horace
